His interest in television came while he was still young when the flat owner of the house they stayed in Kibera came to pick up the. It was owned by a news personality who worked in the presidential press office. He came one day while driving a white Mercedes Benz E-Class W 124.
Mutua was intrigued by the car that he went to look at it. He was later on found by the owner Mutua asked him what he could do to get such a car and which profession the driver was in. The owner informed him of his work in Tv and what it takes to get such a car which was basically hardware and it was from that point that Mutua got the passion for Television. Mutua, later on, bought the same type of model he had seen thirteen years before.
2005 he joined the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication and got an internship at Citizen Tv in 2007. At the same time, Tahidi High was airing and he joined their writing team. His first general pay was 20,000 per episode and he wrote four episodes a month on both Tahidi High and Mother-In-Law. He then began to get 200,000 a month as he was both acting and writing scripts. He one day collapsed in the bathroom from sheer exhaustion and to take a break and quit his job.
He then came to work as the brand ambassador for a politician which was paying him well but itched to come back to the creative scene. It was then that Protel Studios came to him to join their cast and crew for their new production Hapa Kule News. It was the first project he and his partner Philip worked on together. Mutua wrote and directed and acted on the show.
During production, there was the creation of parodies that were really liked by the public. Real House helps of Kawangware was born out of a parody it got over half a million views on YouTube. It was later requested to be turned into a show and 104 episodes were made before Mutua stepped down in 2015.
He stepped down to start his own company which later came to be Phil-lit Productions in 2015. This came with difficulties as he went from earning a salary of 200,000 a month to nothing. He later got a call from Maisha Magic who was in the process of creating a new series of Vioja Mahakamani and wanted a more scripted show than the traditional show.
