Article Updated on October 17, 2020 By Gachie Josphat

Amboseli Porini Camp – Amboseli National Park Kenya

Description

Amboseli Porini Camp is located on Selenkay Conservation Area, a 15,000~acre private game reserve near the northern boundary of Amboseli National Reserve. The conservancy, owned by the Kisonko clan of the Maasai people, is an important wildlife corridor for animals moving in and out of the reserve. This area has known little tourism and in addition to the big mammals, rare game such as caracal, African wildcat, civet, gerenuk and striped hyena are seen here. Birdlife is prolific.

The camp has no permanent structures. The 9 en-suite tents are in the style of the traditional hunting bush camps. Each has a double and single bed, and is lit by solar powered lighting. Drinks are served around the campfire and meals are eaten in the shade ofan acacia tortilis tree. Game drives traverse both Amboseli National Park and Selenkay Conservation Area. Other activities include game walks with Maasai trackers and visits to Maasai villages.

The camp generates an income for the community and provides employment: only the manager and head chef are not from the local Maasai community. Strict policies govern land use, water, waste disposal and energy. Ecotourism Society of Kenya has given Amboseli Porini Camp a prestigious gold level award.
