“But after a few months, I decided that this was not what I wanted for myself. We had a culture clash and a religious clash. I also wanted to be a strong woman; I wanted to make something of myself and my daughter. I wanted to start a business because I am young and energetic. But he wanted someone who was chilled; there was the conversation of me quitting my career and just staying at home. We did not see eye to eye on this. It was a painful discovery, and I knew it was going to hurt once again, but I had to walk. I left with what was mine and gave him what was his and we parted ways peacefully in December 2016.”

On the 23rd of April 2020, she took to her Instagram gram account to thank all the health workers who gave a hand and their time in the hospitals, during the pandemic attack, coronavirus (COVID-19). She also went on to thank NURSE JUDY whom she said she took good care of Ivanna when she was ill:
Betty Kyalo Ken Mijungu
In the year 2019, when Ivanna, Betty’s daughter’s health deteriorated, Betty went thanked all those who assisted her during the difficult period but one name was conspicuously missing, Dennis Okari – Ivanna’s father.
Ken Mijungu, the NTV news anchor, took issue with this saying that betty’s post portrayed Okari as an irresponsible father yet he was constantly in the hospital to monitor Ivanna’s progress.
“Betty, be honest, Okari and even Naomi were there for Ivanna from the day we learned of her illness and were by her side day and night.
“Dennis called me on 23rd March at about 10 am, asked me to drop whatever I was doing because Ivanna was critical. Too weak to walk alone or drive he asked me to pick him at home. We met on Mombasa road since he couldn’t wait for me and we drove straight to the hospital. At Nairobi hospital, Betty blocked my access to the ward cubicle where Ivanna was only allowing Dennis in. I stayed by the glass doors from 11 am to 2 pm watching Ivanna who I must say was very sick,” he narrated
“Okari remained inside all that while with Betty and was joined later by Betty’s mum and sister Gloria. I understood her action because it was about the baby. I left at about 2 pm. For every single day that followed from that day on Okari was at the hospital day and night with his daughter,” divulged Mijungu.
To affirm this, Mijungu stated that Okari only reported work when he could and his boss understood his situation.
“To deliberately paint him (Okari) as irresponsible is immoral my friend. You don’t have to correct the impression you have created because the Somali guy is by your side but at-least be honest.
“We were friends before and one day we shall be friends again. Even though the relationship did not work Ivanna remains part of us and we thank God she is ok,” he wrote, sharing screenshots of his conversation with Betty on Whatapp.
Betty Kyalo Accident
When Betty was in form 3, she had a tragic accident while crossing the road from Railway Station to Gill House in Nairobi on her way to meet up with her friend for lunch. “I was hit by a Double M bus. I fell to the ground and I was dragged under. I was a mess,” she says.
She recalls with a tinge of sadness when she fell on her left side and injured half herself badly. She says in her biography that she broke her left elbow and jaw, fractured her collar bone and four ribs deflated her lungs and half of her face was grazed. It was there an then that some good samaritans got her off the ground and rushed her to hospital.
“I could not walk, go to the toilet on my own and even do basic stuff. The skin on my face was grazed so badly I had no skin on the left side of my face. My jaw was unstable and when I tried to speak it would move. I was hospitalized for two months,” she says.
The injuries she sustained from the accident were so serious that her family was scared of how she would react when she saw her face.
“For a while, my brother and mother would not let me see my reflection because they knew how I would react. But during the hospitalization period, one day I was being taken for an X-ray and I caught a glimpse of my reflection. I immediately sunk into depression. I felt like my life was over because I knew I could never be a news anchor,” she recalls with a sad smile.
She underwent eight consecutive surgeries and in October 2005, she was discharged from the hospital.
“I have always been a free spirit and so I have a lot of friends but for a while, I did not let my friends visit me. I wanted to be alone.” The journey towards recovery was rough, she says. I not only had to learn how to walk again, but I also had to learn to live with my badly bruised face. My doctors had advised my mum on grafting (surgically removing the skin from my thigh and adding it to the left side of my face) but she did not want me to go under the knife because I had already had eight surgeries in two months,” she continued narrating her sad story.
Betty had to return to school, so the following month, November, she resumed studies and luckily enough, the teachers and pupils were supportive and understanding, which helped her heal faster – the school on the other end would provide her all that it takes to make life in school more manageable.
“At first, I was worried and scared about my future, but I reached the point where I stopped worrying and left everything in God’s hands. I refused to wallow in self-pity and took control of my life,” she says resolutely.
By December 2005, she began noticing signs of miracles as she puts it when small patches of her skin were returning to her face and by March 2006, she was well and had gotten a new skin.
“The only things I have now left from the accident are memories and the scars on my neck. Even today when my doctors meet me, they still cannot believe I am the same girl who had half a face. It was a miracle. I became confident and aggressive about my dream. I realized I did not have time to waste because every moment I live is a precious gift,” she says in conclusion.
