Kabarnet Town Guide
Kabarnet Town is located in Baringo County in the Northern Rift Valley region of Kenya, close to Lake Baringo some 265-km northwest of Nairobi.
Kabarnet Town Population
The name Kabarnet was named after a missionary from Australia, Albert Edmund Barnett, who was member of the Africa Inland Mission and came first to central Kenya in 1908. Ka is homestead in the Kalenjin language. The name thus means Barnett’s home. Kabarnet is the administrative headquarters for Baringo District since 1907 as the British colonial government made it to seat of the local government. It is also one of the largest constituencies in the country. It became Municipality in 1984. It has a coat of arms since 1993.
Kabarnet Town Climate
The climate here is mild, generally warm and temperate. Kabarnet is a city with a significant rainfall. Even in the driest month there is a lot of rain. The average annual temperature is 17.8 °C in Kabarnet. The average annual rainfall is 1237 mm.
Precipitation is the lowest in January, with an average of 34 mm. Most of the precipitation here falls in April, averaging 179 mm.
How to get Kabarnet town
You can get in by public transport. Get a bus from Nairobi to Nakuru and then board a matatu to Kabarnet. However, public transport to and around Kabarnet is infrequent and it is advisable to hire or bring your own car. Driving from Nakuru, take the B4 north-bound towards Marigat. About 95 kilometres from Nakuru you will get a right turn off towards Kabarnet. Drive on through the scenic Tugen Hills for about 38 kilometres and you will get to Kabarnet town.
Kabarnet Museum
The Kabarnet Museum was created in the former residence of the District Commissioner and has in its displays elements from local culture and traditions, as well as information on Lake Baringo and its environment. The gardens surrounding the Kabarnet Museum are so lush that it has become a small botanical park.

Kabarnet Hotel
This is a budget hotel within Kabarnet run by the Kenya Tourist Development Corporation. It is slightly out of the town, about 1.5 kilometres on the Kabarnet – Kabartonjo road. Prices as at April 2007 are KES 1200 for a single and 1800 for a double per night including breakfast.
Sinkoro Hotel
This hotel is privately and is in the town centre. Prices are KES 600 for a single and 1000 for a double per night including breakfast. There is limited parking so if you have your own car, it is advisable not to stay here.
People’s Paradise Restaurant
This hotel is located within the town. There is adequate parking space.

Kerio Valley National Reserve

Kerio Valley National Reserve is one of the most renowned tourist attractions within the greater Rift Valley in Kenya is the Kerio Valley. Kerio Valley in Kenya is located in Iten, approximately 30 kilometers from Eldoret town. Kerio Valley tourist attraction site is between the Tugen Hills in Eldoret and the Elgeyo escarpment in Kenya. Eldoret town in Kenya is approximately 6 hours drive from Nairobi city. The Kerio Valley is located at an altitude of at least 1000m above sea level.

Kabarnet Museum

Kabarnet Museum opened its doors in 1996 and uses the former residence of the District Commissioner. It is set in lush botanical gardens with labeled trees and shrubs. Its main public galleries feature educational exhibitions on the Rift Valley peoples cultures, environment, indigenous knowledge and science.
