Kisumu Girls’ High School is located along the busy Kisumu-Kakamega Road, opposite the Kisumu Bus Park. Kisumu Girls High School was established in 1962 as an offshoot of Kisumu Boys High School.
The school was established to cater to the increasing demand for girl child education in Kisumu. The District Education Board (DEB) sponsored the school. The institution was initially a three streamed O-Level girls’ day school. It originally catered exclusively for girls of Asian descent.
However, by 1967, the first African girls were admitted. Advanced (A) Level curriculum was introduced in 1978. As the demand for education increased two ‘Harambee’ streams were established, bringing the total number of streams in the school to five streams. The two ‘Harambee’ streams were later taken over by the government.
Kisumu Girls High School was recently been upgraded to National School with a total population of about 1300 students and 6 streams at each form level. The sponsorship of the school is currently under the County Education Board (CEB). The school is situated next to the main Kisumu Bus Park, along Jomo Kenyatta Highway. The adjacent institutions include Kisumu Boys High School and Lake Primary School. It has had a total number of nine principals.
