Music Journey

After high school, she knew she loved music but did not know exactly what she wanted to do, so her dad helped her choose to study communication at University. He told her that he had a dream that she would do great things in communication. Mayonde began studying communication at Daystar University but her hunger for music would not let her be. She had a copy of Aaron Rumbai’s album; Crucial Keys and behind the album was the Kijiji Records contacts. Mayonde would call them every day begging for something, anything. Around the same time, her elder sister joined Mavuno Church. Her sister is not like me, she is the ultimate extrovert and knows everyone. When she found out that she knew Blackman, the producer at Kijiji, she begged her to introduce her. He called me for auditions, asked me to sing a song and the rest is history. Looking back she felt like that one moment completely changed her life. Blackman has been her great mentor.

The mission was to influence pop culture for Jesus. Because they were under Kijiji Records, she got my first gig as a backup singer. Together with a friend called Shiro, they were BGVs (background vocals) for the group. It was a little intimidating at first because the others are so big in the industry but they were so nice to us they made us feel like family. What is even cooler was that we not only were backup singers but they would let us do solos. They would go and perform in different high schools and churches. They wanted to show kids that being saved does not mean being boring; you could dance and be funky too. Apart from Hip Hope she also got the chance to do background vocals for Atemi and Sarah Mitaro.

“A year ago, I continued telling a companion ‘I would prefer not to return to Coke Studio’ since I sense that its opportunity to make the subsequent stage,” says Trina. Fortuitously, it was at about a similar time that she got a call from her companion and individual artist, Kagwe Mungai, who acquainted her with her present mark Taurus Music.

“We were always making music with the best groups in Africa so it felt like school and the opportunity arrived when I expected to incorporate all that I had learned,” says vocalist, lyricist, and writer Mayonde.

After two seasons on Coke Studio, she felt that she has outgrown the show.

Their fantasies about teaming up on their very own venture which began when they were both reinforcement artists on Coke Studio, has happened with the arrival of their single called “Shika.”

“The music video we did is attractive without being trashy. It is the sauciest, most sure joint effort of Kenyan female specialists,” says Mayonde.

During Coke Studio, the two performers gave foundation vocals to among others American R & B star, Neyo, Vanessa Mdee and Diamond Platnumz from Tanzania, Nigeria’s Mr. Flavor and Kenya’s Victoria Kimani.

“At the point when you are a reinforcement vocalist, you can include your very own smidgen season yet its for the most part about supporting the fundamental artist however as an independent craftsman you have inventive command over the item,” says Trina.

With that experience as foundation vocalists, Mayonde and Trina now welcome the duty regarding their individual brands. That obligation reaches out to promoting and situating yourself as a craftsman. The experience of her initial two releases has instructed her to esteem her adaptability as a craftsman. “I can make tunes that are profound and those that are pop-arranged and they all have a spot. There is an opportunity to be significant and some other time to be joyful and simply move.” Meanwhile, Trina, who additionally plays the low register guitar says her test is in attempting to compose the more agreeable sort of music: “I realize I compose from a profound point of view however I likewise need to compose the basic melodies, the promotion tunes.”

The two craftsmen follow their persuasions to neo-soul artists like Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, and Corrine Bailey Rae.
