Muranga University

Muranga University College (MRUC) was established in September 2011 via Murang’a University College order legal notice No. 129 of September 2011 as a constituent College of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology(JKUAT). MRUC is the successor of Murang’a College of Technology. The University College currently operates under the provision of the Universities Act 2012 CAP 210 B of the laws of Kenya. MRUC is positioning itself to develop a distinctive profile as a progressive and international Technical University, growing its enrolment strategically.

Although Muranga University College has just opened its doors to undergraduate students, MRUC remains strongly committed to exploring how best to harness technology to improve the quality of education it offers students. Through the continued development of our courses, we will continue to explore and embrace sound pedagogy through a combination of active and engaged learning and appropriately matched technological tools. At MRUC, students are being trained to analyze, interpret, and synthesize information from a variety of sources; practice holistic reasoning; improve verbal, visual and written communication skills; organize and contribute to team efforts; and enhance self-confidence and preparation for a career and/or postgraduate training.

Muranga University College intends to build technology and innovations that will go a long way to improve the quality of life of the Kenyans and also contribute to quickening industrialization envisioned in vision 2030.

Muranga University College is located 1.5 km from Murang’a town, 85 km North East of Nairobi, 70 km South East of Nyeri and 50 km South West of Embu. Its location provides a serene environment conducive for learning.

We offer relevant and market driven academic programs for steering socio-economic development. Murang’a University College offers Degree, Diploma and Craft courses in Engineering, Information Technology, Institutional Management, Business and Applied Sciences. The Bachelor of Business Information Technology is a four-year degree programme that prepares students to work in the fields of software development, database administration and networking. It is a modern course that brings together two key aspects of computer training, that is, the link between Information Technology and the business environment. The programme prepares students for the job market through thorough knowledge of Information Technology with an understanding and appreciation of how business is organized and managed.

Our degree programme is designed to prepare students who want to pursue a future in the software engineering industry with in-depth knowledge, skills and technical know-how to design an entire engineering system, by combining the study of Computer Science and Engineering.

Students will learn how to design, analyse and manage complex engineering systems involving many different engineering disciplines, combining theory and practical approaches to software engineering.   • Master of Science (Information Technology)

The Master of Science in Information Technology (MSc.IT) is a program designed to meet the needs of the market for expertise in Information Technology. The program is intended to address the increasing demand in the work-place for IT professionals with a broad and sound knowledge of both technical and managerial skills.

The course is structured to focus on issues surrounding the development, implementation and management of information systems. Course units focusing on applied computer skills are emphasized to address the needs of students from various backgrounds who wish to build careers in the field of information technology. The course also offers leadership and management skills preparing students to take up leadership roles in the IT industry.

Students are prepared to work as information management personnel, system designers and developers, senior level managers in IT, academics in IT, etc. The programme opens the way for candidates who may wish to develop and further their knowledge in IT through research, with the intention of progressing to doctoral levels.

  • Doctor of Philosophy (Information Technology)

The Ph.D. programme offered by the Department of Information Technology is a research degree program. The program is designed for students with a bachelor’s and master’s degree from a variety of disciplines recognized by the University Senate. The doctoral program is intended for serious students who desire to make significant scientific research contributions to the field of Information Technology. While course work is required, it is important to understand that satisfactorily completing course work is not the goal of a doctoral program. A doctoral candidate is required to produce a publishable doctoral dissertation based upon the candidate’s original research. The dissertation must necessarily advance the body of scientific knowledge that underlies the discipline of Information Technology.

A critical component of a doctoral candidate’s development is the dissemination of scientific information. Doctoral candidates are routinely expected to author by themselves or co-author with their professors and fellow students scholarly papers for submission to scientific journals and conference proceedings. Doctoral candidates should also be prepared to present these research results at various national and international conferences.

Muranga University School of Engineering & Technology

The School of Engineering and Technology, SET, was started as one of the pioneer School of Murang’a University of Technology. The Hospitality Management Certificate Programme trains individuals for entry-level positions in the food service, Hotel and lodging industries. The curriculum enables students to pursue various positions, such as Front Desk Clerk, Food Service Worker, Convention Services Coordinator, Banquet Server, Housekeeper, Hotel Sales Coordinator, Beverage Supervisor, Hotel Reservations Specialist, and Food Production Worker. During the hotel practicum, students receive on-site training in the restaurants and hotels in Kenya.

Diploma in Hospitality Management is a substantive management programme, typically delivered over a two year period in the case of full-time students. The Course combines practical career-based elements with a number of essential underpinning management disciplines that will be invaluable as the individual’s career progresses. The course is therefore an ideal preparation for immediate employment in the sector.

Students learn about food service and production alongside a variety of academic disciplines, including foreign languages. Throughout the program, virtues, such as discipline, punctuality, ethics and hygiene are encouraged as they are highly valued throughout the world and count as much as academic and practical skills in ensuring a successful career.

The Diploma Programme is designed to be broadly equivalent to that of the first year of a bachelor’s degree; students may use the qualification to apply for credit entry to a number of bachelor degree programme.

Hospitality is a thriving industry across the country. Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management helps prepare you to compete for entry-level management positions in the hospitality industry that can lead to eventual leadership positions in the field. Its varied course of study prepares students with both the management theories and operational competencies necessary to enter any segment of the industry upon graduation. Upon graduation from this program, you will be qualified to seek employment as a hotel and lodging manager, food service manager or resort manager.

Hospitality Management course work includes training in specific skills areas such as purchasing, accounting, marketing, and management. But the programme also focuses on soft-skills areas such as professionalism, customer service, dependability, work ethic, and team dynamics.

The programme endeavor to maintain strong ties with local, regional, and national employers in all sectors of hospitality. This would lead to a wide array of employment opportunities for employment at graduation.

Admission Requirements

The entry requirements set out below must be regarded as minimum requirements which in no way directly entitles an applicant to a place in the University. The following requirements must be fulfilled: –

A Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education with an average grade C+ (C Plus) or its equivalent passed from at least eight subjects as one sitting drawn from subject clusters as stipulated by the Kenya National Examinations Council.

The Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management is a four-year degree program that provides a solid foundation for the management of tourism businesses. The program provides the most up-to-date knowledge, innovations, technologies, and management techniques in the tourism industry. By the end of the program, you will be able to explain the complexity of the environmental, socio-cultural and global diversity as it affects the modern tourism industry. You will also integrate and implement business management principles, practices and ethics in occupational pursuits in the travel and tourism industry.

The program curriculum provides a healthy blend of theory and practice. Through case studies and research, students are introduced to current management issues with local, regional, national and international tourism businesses and organizations. Students are able to build their entrepreneurial and managerial skills for careers in travel and tourism industry.

Employment Opportunities are: Travel Agency services, Airport Services, Tourism Management, Leisure Resorts Operations, Wildlife Conservation, Development and Management, State funded Tourism Organizations.

Entry Requirements

The entry requirements set out below must be regarded as minimum requirements which in no way directly entitles an applicant to a place in the University. The following requirements must be fulfilled: –

A Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education with an average grade C+ (C Plus) or its equivalent passed from at least eight subjects as one sitting drawn from subject clusters as stipulated by the Kenya National Examinations Council.
C (plain) in the following subject:
English/Kiswahili/
Mathematics/Physics
Biology/Chemistry
Geography/History & Government/Home Science/ Agriculture
OR

Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE) with a principal pass OR Diploma in Tourism Management OR Diploma in relevant field.

Muranga University School of Education

The School has various undergraduate, and post-graduate academic programmes and more are being developed and will be launched immediately they are approved. Every assignment, course, and programme is designed to deliver the knowledge and expertise required for success in the field of Education.

Muranga University Undergraduate Programs

Students registering for a Bachelor of Education degree programme are informed that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) which is the Commission mandated by law to register and employ teachers requires prospective teachers to have a minimum mean grade C+ and above at KCSE, it also requires the prospective student teacher to have also earned a minimum grade C+ in the selected two teaching subjects, and have attended and passed at least 8 course units in each of the two (2) teaching subjects at the University.

  • Bachelor of Education (Science)

K.C.S.E mean grade C+ with a C+ in any two of the following: Mathematics, Geography, Chemistry, Physics, Biology/Biological Science or Computer Science; OR a Diploma in relevant discipline from an institution recognized by CUE and the University Senate.

  • Bachelor of Education (Arts)

K.C.S.E mean grade C+ with a C+ in English and two relevant teaching subjects; OR A level two principals and one (1) subsidiary pass; OR A diploma in Education from an institution recognized by CUE and the University Senate.

Muranga University Postgraduate Programs

  • Master in Education (Administration, Planning and Economics)

Bachelor’s degree with at least Second Class honours (Upper Division) in Education from an institution recognized by CUE and the University Senate; OR Be a holder of a Bachelors degree with Lower Second Class honours in Education provided that the candidate can show proven evidence of three (3) years teaching experience.

  • Master in Education (Education Communication Technology)

Bachelor’s degree with at least Second Class honours (Upper Division) in Education from an institution recognized by CUE and the University Senate; OR Be a holder of a Bachelors degree with Lower Second Class honours in Education provided that the candidate can show proven evidence of three (3) years teaching experience.

  • Master of Education  (Guidance and Counseling)

Bachelor’s degree with at least Second Class honours (Upper Division) in Education from an institution recognized by CUE and the University Senate; OR Be a holder of a Bachelors degree with Lower Second Class honours in Education provided that the candidate can show proven evidence of three (3) years teaching experience.

  • Master in Early Childhood Education and Primary Education

Bachelor’s degree with at least Second Class honours (Upper Division) in Education from an institution recognized by CUE and the University Senate; OR Be a holder of a Bachelors degree with Lower Second Class honours in Education provided that the candidate can show proven evidence of three (3) years teaching experience.

  • Master of Philosophy (Education Psychology)

Bachelor’s degree with at least Second Class honours (Upper Division) in Education from an institution recognized by CUE and the University Senate; OR Be a holder of a Bachelors degree with Lower Second Class honours in Education provided that the candidate can show proven evidence of three (3) years teaching experience.
