A Guide To Sadili Oval
Sadili Oval is a unique centre for sports talent identification, harnessing and training, mostly for young people. The most popular sport in this club is tenis. It has a health and wellness centre as well as sports gymnasium, and is patronised by young people using the academy and professionals alike.
“Sadili” comes from a Kiswahili term, meaning “well-being”. Sadili Oval Sports Academy has its beginnings as a swamp that became a dumpsite near the Kibera slums, a situation complicated by an open sewer from 7 estates of 500 houses. A group of professionals, looking for a way to promote education and provide a way in which children could use their time better, instead of the prevailing drugs and hooliganism, purchased this land and proceeded to reclaim and develop it in 1992, a process that took almost 7 years. By 1998, Sadili became the only available space for children from Kibera and the adjoining estates of Langata, to play sport, and learn life skills and environmental leadership.
Sadili Oval Sports Academy is a social enterprise that uses sport and education to empower children and youth to improve lifestyle and towards earning an income or scholarship for further schooling for a better future. The use of sport is the single-most influential medium that cuts across all cultural and social barriers and provides opportunity to influence behavioral change, and provide a means for social integration.
