Sadili Oval

Article Updated on October 18, 2020 By Andrew IC

A Guide To Sadili Oval

Sadili Oval is a unique centre for sports talent identification, harnessing and training, mostly for young people. The most popular sport in this club is tenis. It has a health and wellness centre as well as sports gymnasium, and is patronised by young people using the academy and professionals alike.
“Sadili” comes from a Kiswahili term, meaning “well-being”. Sadili Oval Sports Academy has its beginnings as a swamp that became a dumpsite near the Kibera slums, a situation complicated by an open sewer from 7 estates of 500 houses. A group of professionals, looking for a way to promote education and provide a way in which children could use their time better, instead of the prevailing drugs and hooliganism, purchased this land and proceeded to reclaim and develop it in 1992, a process that took almost 7 years. By 1998, Sadili became the only available space for children from Kibera and the adjoining estates of Langata, to play sport, and learn life skills and environmental leadership.
