Trans Nzoia County Overview

Trans Nzoia County is found in Kenya’s former Rift Valley Province 380 km North West of Nairobi. It situated within on area of 2,495.5 km2 surrounded by the Republic of Uganda to the North West, Bungoma County to the West and South West, Kakamega County and Uasin Gishu County to the South East, Elgeyo Markwet County to the East and West Pokot County to the North.

This region lies between Mt. Elgon and Cherangany Hills approximately between latitudes 00° 52´ and 10° 18´ north of the equator and longitudes 340° 38´ and 350° 23´ east of the great Meridian.

Major Towns in Trans Nzoia County

Kitale town is the largest commercial city and the administrative capital of the county. Other major towns include Kiminini, Sibanga, Maili Saba, Endebess, and Saboti.

History of Trans Nzoia County

Prior to the promulgation of the Kenya Constitution on the 27th August 2010, the present day Trans Nzoia County was administered as Trans Nzoia District under the Provincial Administration system. The district was established by the British colonial government in the early 20th century. With the promulgation of the Constitution, the Provincial system of administration was restructured as Kenya embraced a devolved system of governance.

People of Trans Nzoia County

The County is home to about 818757 people, 50% being male and 50% female as per 2009 census. The county has cosmopolitan setting, with Luhya, Kalenjin, Sabaot (Elgon Maasai) and Kikuyu being the main resident communities.

Trans Nzoia County Constituencies

The county is divided into five constituencies that double up as sub-counties. The constituencies/sub-counties are further divided into smaller electoral units called wards. The constituencies include:

  1. Cherangany constituency
  2. Saboti constituency
  3. Kwanza constituency
  4. Kiminini constituency
  5. Endebess constituency

Climate and Weather of Trans Nzoia County

Trans Nzoia has a cool and temperate climate with average annual temperatures ranging between a minimum of 10°C to a maximum of 27°C. The county receives annual precipitation ranging between 1000 and 1200mm, with the wettest months being experienced between April and October.

Economy, Business and Investment Opportunities in Trans Nzoia County

Agriculture is the leading economic activity as Trans Nzoia County is considered the bread basket of Kenya due to its large scale maize farms. The county is considered to be one of the most food secure in Kenya. Other economic activities include Horticulture, Wheat Farming, Tea, Coffee, , Fishing and commerce with Kitale Town bein the main commercial hub.

The county hosts tourist attractions such as the Mt. Elgon National Park part of which sits the Mount Elgon, Kenya’s Second highest mountain, Kitale Nature Conservancy, Saiwa Swamp National Park.

Economic Activities in Trans Nzoia County

The arable land in the county makes agriculture the main economic activity. Maize farming is widely practised, and mostly at a commercial level. Tea, coffee, horticulture and commercial businesses are also very significant to the county’s economy. There’s dairy farming and tourism – owing to an array of touring sites within the county. A number of companies such as Kenya seed company, Western Seed Company, K.C.C and various government institutions provide employment to many people living in the urban centers.

There are about 78 health institutions in the County – 2 District Hospitals, 2 Sub-District Hospitals and 33 Dispensaries. The county has 7 health centers, 28 medical clinics and about 6 nursing homes. Some of the health facilities in the county include Kitale District Hospital and Kapsara District Hospital.

Education in Trans Nzoia County

There are 470 primary schools and 120 secondary schools in the region. Trans Nzoia also has over 20 tertiary institutions, including a university campus, a nursing training college, a teachers’ training college, farmers training institute, youth polytechnic and a number of commercial colleges.

Financial Institutions in Trans Nzoia County

Some of the banks found in the county include Barclays Bank, Diamond Trust Bank, Cooperative Bank, Standard Chattered Bank, Kenya Commercial Bank (K.C.B), National Bank of Kenya and Equity Bank. There are also other several microfinance institutions in the county including Faulu and SMEP (Small and Micro-Enterprise Programme).

Notable Personalities in Trans Nzoia County

Some of the renowned personalities who hail from Trans Nzoia include the former Vice President Michael Kijana Wamalwa, Milcah Chemos, a commonwealth games’ champion and Wesley Korir, a long distance runner who is also an elected Member of Parliament.

The major tourist attraction sites in the county include the Kitale Museum, Mt. Elgon National Park, Kitale Nature Conservancy and Saiwa Swamp National Park.

Kitale Museum

Kitale Museum was the first of the Inland museums to be developed in Kenya. It used to be known by the name the Stoneham Museum. It got its name from an amateur naturalist who lived in Kitale, by the name Lieutenant colonel Hugh Stoneham.

Kitale Nature Conservancy

This conservancy is part of Mt Elgon and Cherangani hills ecosystem. This grasslands and woodlands used to be home of abundant wildlife that were wiped out through hunting. Its effort now reveal a host of Kongoni, Sitatunga, Bongo, Black Rhino, elephants, Reed Buck and Rothschild giraffes.
