Mandera Town Overview

Mandera Town is a town in Mandera County, Kenya. It is the capital of the Mandera County. The town is located in the very northeastern part of Kenya, bordering Ethiopia and Somalia. The capital city of Somalia, Mogadishu is about 400 km away. It takes two days to travel by road from Nairobi to Mandera (approx.1100 km).
The town is located in an area prone to drought. As with the other areas of the North Eastern Province, Mandera is inhabited almost exclusively by ethnic Somalis. The majority of Somalis in Mandera are from the Degodia, Murule, and Garre clans, with a minority representing the Sheekhaal, Marehan, Sharmooge and Leysan clans.

Economic Activities in Mandera Town

Nomadic pastoralism is the major economic activity in this county with camels, goats, sheep and cattle being the main type of livestock reared here. The regions vast pasture lands held this activity to be viable though much more could be done to ensure the county plays its role in the country’s beef and milk production markets.
The main water sources in the region are the River Daua, a number of shallow water wells and a few major earth pans. The region has small scale agricultural production with small scale horticultural producers supplying mangoes, pawpaws, onions, kales and bananas to the local markets. Other crops that can be found are cow-peas and maize.

Mandera safe despite attack, says Boinnet

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet has said Mandera is safe despite Monday’s terror attack, in which a Kenya police reservist was killed and an Equity Bank branch was partly destroyed.
Boinnet, speaking in Mandera town on Tuesday, said there is no country in the world which is completely safe from crime because criminals utilise any available opportunity to strike.
His visit came a day after the terror attack despite a curfew that was extended by a government gazette notice dated March 29, last year.
The Monday morning attack was executed within the CBD. The police are yet to make any arrest.
Suspected al Shabaab terrorist planted explosives at the Mandera Equity Bank branch which destroyed the front window panes and blocks making the rear part of the building. Banks remained closed on Monday.
Area county commissioner Fredrick Shisia said the attackers were targeting the Jabane Hotel, where eight non-local residents had boarded with 10 other locals.
The attackers planted three improvised explosive devices at the hotel which is adjacent to the hotel and one on a path where security agents pass.
Boinett said his visit was in line with streamlining security operations in the region through consultations with the region’s security agents.
Mandera has experienced several terror attacks since the country moved its troops inside Somalia in 2011.
The IG was making his first visit in the region since he was appointed in December 2014 after numerous terror attacks where some 28 people travelling in a bus were killed by the Al Shabaab in November 2014 with 36 miners killed in Koromey quarry in December the same year.
He called on residents to cooperate with police to curb terror activities in the region.

Mandera Town Climate and Geography

Mandera’s climate is categorized as arid under the Köppen climate classification. Temperatures tend to be hot throughout the year. Daily temperatures are typically above 30 °C (86 °F), while at night, they can fall to 20 °C (68 °F). Precipitation is extremely low, with the area receiving a very minimal amount of rain. Droughts are not unusual, often resulting in significant loss of livestock in rural areas where pastoralism is common.
