Kericho Town
Kericho Town is a Kenyan town located to the South West of the Kenya and lies within the highlands west of The Great Rift Valley. Kericho town is the capital of the Kericho County. Kericho is home to the best of Kenyan Tea in Kenya which is world famous for its brightness, attractive color, brisk flavor and of fragrant leaves.

Kericho is the home town of the Kipsigis people, who are a part of the Kalenjin people of the Kalenjin tribe. The Kipsigis are rated some of the most hospitable and courteous people in the country.
The Kipsigis just like their Kalenjin counterparts are well known to be good in Athletics. Athletes such as Kipchoge Keino have brought great victory during World Athletic Competitions. The Kipsigis is one of the communities in Kenya that still hold their cultural values dearly.
The favorite meal in the for the Kipsigis people is Maize meal (kimyet) that is enjoyed with vegetables and beef. An almost constant accompaniment is a glass of sour milk locally known as Mursik. Tea is also widely consumed in the county, taken 3 times a day at dawn, midmorning and at 4 o’clock. Tea after the evening meal is also common.
Kericho’s climate is classified as warm and temperate. Kericho has a significant amount of rainfall during the year. This is true even for the driest month. The climate here is classified as Cfb by the Köppen-Geiger system. The average temperature in Kericho is 18.1 °C. About 1735 mm of precipitation falls annually.

The origin of towns name has not been established. One theory is that it was home to the region’s first public hospital, built by the British at the dawn of the 20th century. Medicine in the local Kipsigis language is referred to as Kerichek. Another theory is that the town was originally home of a medicine man named KipKerich or after a Maasai chief, Ole Kericho who was killed in the 18th Century by the Abagusii.

Chagaik Botanic Garden
Kericho will give you breath-taking scenes of the vast tea plantations, moreover, if you want some peace and quiet, you must consider spending some time at the arboretum at Chagaik Botanic Garden. Chagaik is located to the right on the Kericho-Nakuru highway, it is about 10 kilometers from Kericho.
Chagaik Botanic Garden is an enclave of tropical jungle formed by lush green grass and a variety of indigenous tree species; surrounded by orderly tea plantations. Furthermore, here you will find a small dam located at the bottom of the valley.
You can rest up or picnic in this shelter of tranquility, it is also a reliable spot for Colombus monkeys, insects and forest birds.
Ruma National Park
Ruma National Park
Ruma National Park (formerly Lambwe Valley National Reserve) is located in Lambwe Valley in South Nyanza, 140 km from Kisumu. It was established in 1966, to protect the small herd roan of antelope and Jackson’s hartebeest. One of the smallest of the antelope family, the Oribi, also can be seen. Predators such as lion and cheetah are present too.
Its main attractions are game-viewing, walking, fishing in the rivers, hiking and bird watching, the fish eagle, white egret and Blue Swallow among other 145 different bird species have been recorded in the Ruma.
Ruma can be reached from Kericho via Kisii, and then through the fishing villages of Homa Bay and Kendu Bay. This park sees few visitors. There is no hotel or lodge accommodation in the park, but there are two campsites.

Tea was first cultivated in the highlands around Kericho in the 1920s. Today more than 110,000 hectares are devoted to tea, producing 215 million kilos of tea per year and bringing in 17—2O% of Kenya’s export revenue. The Tea Hotel started life as the guesthouse for Brooke Bond, in 1952. In the 19705 it was sold to the local community who have run it since as the Tea Hotel.

Kericho has a comparatively good transport network. Road is the main mode of transport to and around the county. There are 3 main highways that lead to Kericho town, the Nakuru-Kericho, the Kisumu-Kericho and the Kericho-Kisii highways. An alternative route to Kericho would be Nakuru-Njoro-Molo-Kericho, this road is in good condition. The Nakuru-Eldoret highway to Kisumu is in an excellent state. The county has direct bus (matatu) links to Nakuru, Kisumu, Eldoret, Kisii and Bomet towns. Rail transport is available from Kipkelion, Londiani and Fort-Ternan stations, all agricultural hubs within the county. Air transport is also available through chartered light aircraft from Wilson Airport, Nairobi. The county’s main airstrip is Kerenga Aerodrome, 10 km from Kericho town.
Kericho has a good communication infrastructure. The town is home to one of the only 2 satellite earth stations (the only available international link for Kenya). It is also served by a fibre optic cable. The county is well covered by the fixed line operator Telkom Kenya and the 4 mobile operators Yu, Safaricom, Zain and Orange who offer voice and data services.
The county is served by all major local TV stations. KBC is still widely watched. Others are KTN, K-24, NTV, Citizen TV, Family TV, STV and Sayare. All FM station broadcasting from Nairobi are also available including Capital, Easy, Kiss, Classic, Family, Hope, BBC, Citizen, KBC etc. Local stations include Kass FM, Chamgei FM, KBC Kisumu, Radio Injili 103.7 FM, Sayare TV & Radio. Light and Life 107.3 FM, Sema Radio and The Just FM.
Kericho residents are mostly Christians. The most widespread church is the Africa Gospel Church which has affiliations with The World Gospel Mission of the USA. The church has the biggest church in the county in the town (Immanuel AGC) and heart centers at Cheptenye, Chepkutung, Keongo, Kipkelion, Londiani, Kabianga and Kaptebeswet.
The other churches present in the county include AIC, Catholic Church, Anglican Church, SDA, Full Gospel and a host of Independent churches.
Kericho is also home to Africa’s largest Gurudwara or Sikh place of worship. It is a monument, dedicated to the memory of “Baba Puran Singh Ji of Kericho” who was the founder of the international charitable organisation, Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha which promotes the spirit and practice of selfless service (“nishkam sewa”) in the name of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of the Sikh faith. The site has been gazetted by the Government of Kenya as a place of spiritual significance. Kericho also holds the Muslim faith with at least two mosques. There is also a Hindu population.
Paramount chief, Cheborge arap Tengecha was one of the most powerful and the most influential paramount Chiefs in the Kipsigis land from economics, social to political matters. Dr. Taitta Toweett was a prominent politician in the county. A renowned scholar in Linguistics and culture, Dr. Towett was the first Education Minister in independent Kenya. He died in 2007 in a road accident aged over 80, Moses Kiprono arap Keino (born September, 1937 – November 4, 1998) was Speaker of the Parliament of Kenya from 1988 until 1991. Other famous people born in the county include former politicians Prof. Jonathan Ngeno, Kipkalya Kones, Lorna Laboso and David Kimutai Too. Others are Franklin Bett, Kipngeno arap Ngeny, Noah arap Too. Other achievers from the county include Mr. Paul Melly (Standard Group, CMA), Samuel Kirui (Telkom, PS, OPDM), Prof Mibei (VC, Moi University), Wilson Chepkwony (State House), Jeremiah Ruto (Director KARI, TRF), Kipchamba arap Tapotuk who was a famous musician. Joel arap Kimeto who is a renowned gospel musician and also the director of radio Injili 103.7 FM formerly at Chepsir, North of Kericho town.
Kericho is the birthplace of Joginder Singh, Kenya’s famous Rally Driver. Joyce Chepchumba, a successful woman marathoner and an Olympic medalist is also from Kericho. Dr Baldev Singh, National Teacher of the Year for Innovation in Education in the UK in 2004 is Kericho-born.

Isiolo Town is a town in the Eastern Province, Kenya, in the Upper Eastern sub-region and lying 285 kilometres north of Nairobi, the Capital City of Kenya. Isiolo town grew around the local military camps, much of the population being descended from former Somali soldiers who had fought in World War I and the other cushitic pastoral communities.
The county has three climatic zones, semi-arid and very arid. The characteristics of these zones are as follows:
The rainfall here is between 300-350 mm per annum and can only support annual grasslands and a few shrubs.
The county is predominantly flat with low lying plains that rise gradually from an altitude of 200m above sea level at Lorian Swamp in the north to about 300m above sea level at Merti Plateau. Ewaso Nyiro River dissects the county into two. To the north is Merti plateau and to the south are the plains that rise to an altitude of 1000m above sea level with some inselbergs towards Nyambene Hills.

Isiolo town is the Headquarter of the county and the gateway to the northern half of the country. The town has an estimated population of 80,000 people, most of them living in the rural outbacks of the County. There is an increasing urban population in the recent years, especially from as far as Moyale, Marsabit and mandera. The Isiolo town is also becoming a centre of interst because of the of its newly acquired status as a resort city cashing in popular Samburu and Shaba Game reserves which have become preferred destination after the famed Maasai Mara. Isiolo lies along the long A2 Road, leading towards Marsabit and Moyale much farther north. The town is served by Isiolo Airport, which is set to be upgraded to serve tourism and local exports.
Isiolo hosts a mix of tribes including: Boran, Somali, Turkana, Samburu and Rendille (all traditional pastoralists) and the Meru (agro-business), with a number of other tribes from all over Kenya also being present (due to military bases located in the vicinity). The town of Isiolo is small but cosmopolitan. With a scenic beauty including an eclectic mix of peoples and cultures, Isiolo is home to the Niger-Congo and Nilo-Saharan-speaking Ameru, Samburu and Turkana, as well as the Cushitic-speaking Rendille and Boran. The large Somali population is mainly the result of retired Somali soldiers who settled in the area after World War I.
Isiolo is set to become a major part of Kenya’s economic development plan Vision 2030. The plan calls for Isiolo to become a tourist center that will include include casinos, hotels, upscale retail outlets, a modern airport and transport facilities.
Isiolo town was designated as the Headquarters of the Northern frontier Countys by The British East Africa Protectorate in 1922, until the North Eastern was curved out as a separate province in 1963 following the Lancaster House Constitutional conference. Some parts of the countys were lost to the larger Meru County in 1960s during the Shifta war at the instigation of the then powerful Meru minister of Lands, Jackson Angaine. Some of the famous grazing land such as Bisaan Adi and Bisaan Gurach became part of Meru National Game Reserve and Mulika Lodge. Isiolo is also known for its large market, while jewellery making is a local industry. The Samburu, Buffalo Springs and Shaba National Reserves lie north of the town, while Lewa Downs reserve is located south of Isiolo. The Meru National Park lies in the North East of the town.
Camel milk production and marketing in the periurban areas of Africa is an emerging innovation with development potential. Pastoralists are increasingly producing milk for the market as well as for subsistence, contributing to the growth of a production subsector with notable resilience to climate variability and change. In Kenya’s Isiolo County, the subsector is not yet fully developed and remains highly informal, with mainly women trading raw milk between families and clans. The Agricultural Sector Development Programme has recognised the camel milk value chain as one of the three most strategic value chains in Isiolo County.

Lewa Conservancy
The lewa conservancy is a private ranch and a breeding ground of the Black Rhinos. Lewa Rhino sanctuary has recorded the largest number of Black rhino calves in the recent past. Lewa is famous for lion and rhino tracking. Accommodation at Lewa conservancy is provided by Lewa House (USD 460PP per night), Lewa Safari Camp and Wilderness Trails. The Lewa conservancy hosts the annual Safaricom Lewa Marathon (June), where participants run among the big game. It is one of the most adventurous in the world.
On the banks of Ngare Ndare lies the famous Borana Ranch. Named after the Zebu cow, Borana Ranch is an active cattle ranch that incorporates wildlife conservation. Borana ranch is famous for its horse stables. They have horses to cater for all riders. Big game watching on the horse back is one of the unique activities at Borana. Guests are free to ride horses among the giraffes, hartebeests and impalas. On horseback, guests can also explore the nearby Ndare Ngare forest and the moorlands of Mt. Kenya. Tourism will be the leading sector in achieving the goals of the vision where it is aimed that the country will be among the 10 long haul tourist destination in the world, offering a high-end, diverse and distinctive visitor experience that few of her competitors can offer.’’ In Vision 2030, the Government plans to focus on three specific areas to achieve the goals for 2012: to quadruple tourism’s GDP contribution to over Ksh80 billion; to raise international visitors from 1.8 million in 2006 to three million in 2012 while raising average spend per visitor from the current Sh40,000 to at least Sh70,000 and; to increase hotel beds from 40,000 to about 65,000, combined with an emphasis on high quality service.
The establishment of the three resort cities—two at the Coast and the other in Isiolo–is classified as tourism’s flagship projects. One resort will be located at the North Coast while the second one will be at the South Coast. The third in Isiolo County will be located just on the outskirts of Isiolo town. The Government has already opened discussions on the project with the Isiolo County Council. About 1, 000 hectares needs to be allocated for the resort project. Developed on the model of South Africa’s Sun City, each of the resort cities in Kenya will be allocated enough hectares of land to enable the facilities have casinos, golf courses, restaurants and discotheques among other features. Isiolo, as part of Kenya’s safari destination, was picked because of the fame acquired by Shaba Game Reserve that had attracted filmmakers from across the globe.
‘’It is Joy and George Adamson who made Shaba famous. As a result, many major films have been shot here. We have a scenery that rivals Hollywood right here.’’ The Adamsons reared lions starting with lioness Elsa and later released them into the wild. Joy died at Shaba, while her husband was killed at neighbouring Kora National Reserve. Movies shot at Shaba over the last two decades include Born Free, Out Of Africa, To Walk with Lions and CBS TV blockbuster series, Survivor Africa.
There are matatus from Nairobi to Nanyuki, from there onwards to Isiolo. Matatus to Nanyuki can be boarded in the River Road area of Nairobi.

6. Gaddisa Hotel and Safari
This is where the tarmac road ends and the frontier town marks the start of Kenya’s north-eastern area of desert scrub, mountains and Lake Turkana. This is the last place you will find a bank or petrol (except for at the Samburu Lodge), before Maralal or Marsabit. This is a good place to buy food before going north and it has a market for fruit and vegetables. The area north is home to the Samburu, Rendille, Boran and Turkana people. The town has a large Somali population after ex-Somali soldiers were resettled here after the First World War.
Geographically, the town is at strategic position, being less than 300-km from the capital city.
The town, which is also some few kilometres from the foot of Mt Kenya, also borders the economically vibrant Meru and Nanyuki towns.
The famous Great Northern Road passes through Isiolo, linking the country with other African states like Ethiopia and Sudan and Egypt.
Successive regimes in Kenya promised to tarmac the road up to Moyale Town. However, the promise is yet to be honoured.
It is quite sad and tragic to note that, even the roads within the town centre are in pathetic and sorry state.
The current government had a noble idea of upgrading the Isiolo airstrip. The merits of this need not to be overemphasized. But the sad part of it is that the plan has been shelved. The town has a county council that receives millions of shillings from tourists who visit the local game reserves.
This is in addition to what the council receives from the central government. The irony is that the impact of the huge vote head of the council is not being felt in the entire county.
Isiolo International Airport
Isiolo Airport is located on the border of Isiolo, in Isiolo County with half of the runaway extending into Meru County. Its location is approximately 283 kilometres (176 mi), by road, and about 200 kilometres (120 mi), by air, north-east of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, the country’s largest civilian airport. The geographic coordinates of this airport are:0° 20′ 37.00″N, 37° 35′ 16.00″E (Latitude:0.343610; Longitude:37.587778).
There are no proper schools. Garba Tulla, which was the only national school in the region, is decaying.
Universities being awarded to different corners are a distant dream to a region without polytechnics. There was a long-term plan to build Dabasso Wabera Polytechnic in Marsabit. Of course, it never took off.
Since 1995, the town has been the seat of the Vicariate Apostolic of Isiolo. On July 14, 2005, Bishop Luigi Locati, who represented the Roman Catholic Church in Isiolo, was murdered. The town is nearly half Christian and half Muslim.
Homa Bay Town Kenya is located along the north – eastern part of Lake Victoria. It borders the Homa Bay, from which the town derived it name.
In the northwest, the town boundary is formed inside the Lake, in the east by Kochia / Kanyada boundary, in the west by Kanyada Kanyamwa location boundaries, and in the south by the line between Kabunde airstrip and Oturbam passing through Ogande Girls secondary school.
Homa Bay Town is located 105 kilometers South of Kisumu City and 405 kilometers southwest of Nairobi the capital city of Kenya.
The town lies at an altitude of approximately 4000 feet at 1330 meters above sea level. It covers an area of 197 square kilometers of which half is inside Lake Victoria leaving the remaining area for active development.
Homa Bay town’s climatic condition is semi- arid and it has two rainy seasons. Long rains which falls between the months of March and May while short rains fall between September and November with approximately measurements of 1180 millimeters. Its daily temperature falls between 26-28 oC.
Homa Bay town is accessible by road through Kisumu to Nairobi and Kisumu to Kampala through Jinja, on the northeastern part of the Town. On the southeastern it is accessible by road through Kisii to Nairobi and through Migori Sirare and Mwanza. It is also accessible by Lake through Mbita Point, Musoma, Bukoba and Jinja. Homa Bay town also has an air strip located 5 kilometers away from the Town centre which is used occasionally by light planes. Railway connection from this town is Kisumu by steamer or road.
Composition of the Council.Homa Bay Municipal council is divided into 6 wards each ward represented by a councillor totaling to six councillors. The Minister nominates 2 councillors and a Public Officer representing parties and the government. Homa Bay Municipal Council is composed of gender sensitive representations out of 9 councillors 2 of them are women. The municipal wards are:
The civic wing is headed by a non – executive mayor assisted by the deputy Mayor.
Council Committees. Civic body is divided into 4 committees headed by a committee chairman. The committees are:

3. Public Health & environment deals with Health and environment matters.

Socio-Economic Profile The major activities taking place within the municipality are:
1. Employment of skilled and unskilled workers. 2. Trading and wholesale, retail, hawking, micro enterprise, touting, non – motorized transport business, motor boat, taxi buses, minibuses transport. 3. Fishing and fish mongering. 4. Industrial business, fish processing and by products factory, maize, sorghum, ground nuts, millet and potatoes.
Education Homa Bay Municipal council has both public and private primary and secondary schools.
Health Homa Bay has one public hospital which is the county hospital, private hospitals and dispensaries all which takes care of all kinds of sicknesses both in patients and out patients. There are several VCT centre both public and private to take care of HIV (AIDS) pandemics
Land Development The land uses which are taken into account for the following suitability classification are housing, crop cultivation and forestry.
Housing The land use type housing is considered as Homa Bay town is rapidly growing and degradation of the living environment is encountered. Most likely they are the result from building on for this use unsuitable land. Town planning could not keep up with the rapid growth.
Crop CultivationThe land use type crop cultivation is considered as Homa Bay is not self sufficient in food production however there is still a lot of land that is not yet under urban use and will not be in the near future. This land that is of important value and good suitability for crop production is sufficiently being used for agriculture crop production which serves the town and also sold outside the Municipal area.
Forestry A lot of trees are grown within the urban and peri-urban areas for conservation of environment. However, shortage of wood fuel is being experienced in town, therefore forcing people to import from outside though import of wood is very expensive and causes land degradation in the area of origin. mus village of Rugus is on the East.

Webuye town is an Industrial town in Western part of Kenya. The predominant tribe is the Bukusu tribe, one of the 42 tribes in Kenya. Webuye, previously named Broderick Falls, is an industrial town in Bungoma County, Kenya. Located on the main road to Uganda.
