Murang’a Town
Murang’a Town is a town in the Central Province of Kenya. The town was previously called Fort Hall. It is the administrative center of Murang’a County and is mainly inhabited by Kikuyu tribe.
Murang’a Town Climate
Muranga town is located between Nyeri and Thika. The town of Maragua is located 10 kilometers south of Murang’ a while Sagana town is 15 kilometers northeast of Murang’ a. It lies on the latitude of -0.7167 (0° 43’ O) and longitude of 37.1500 (37° 8’ 60E) The town itself lies low, a bit hilly, small but picturesque with an altitude of 4120 ft (1255 meters) above sea level.
As a result of the varying altitudes, Murang’ a can get quite cold during the cooler parts of the year from May to Mid-August, including experiencing hale. To the west of the town, you have a unique and mysterious farming land of Kikuyu that extends as eyes can see.

Murang’a Town History
When missionaries first came to Kenya, they were prevented from settling on the coast by the Portuguese, who had taken the coastal area, strategic for trade, from Arab powers in the 16th century. The missionaries were forced to venture into Kenya’s rugged interior and Murang’ a was one of the first places they settled. When the British set up the East African Protectorate in 1895, their first administrative post (Fort Smith) was located in Murang’ a.
One of the main highlights of Murang’ a’s history, however, is that the Mau Mau uprising that was led by the Agikuyu community who consider Murang’ their ancestral origin. Murang’ a is thus considered by some as the birthplace of the Kenyan independence movement. Missionaries had initially been welcomed by Karuri Wagakure who was the chief of Tuthu. They set up the first mission church in Kenya at Murang’ a. Murang’ a is also the source of many big rivers like River Maragua which originates from the heart of the Aberdare range, River Mathioya, River Kayahwe, River Irati, River Muriurio, and many others. Murang’a is additionally known for its fertile farming soil and good climate with maize in Kenya, beans farming in Kenya, sweet potatoes in Kenya, arrowroots in Kenya, pumpkins in Kenya,bananas farming in Kenya and numerous other food crops grown in the region. Tea in Kenya and Coffee in Kenya are the main cash crops produced.
Murang’a County
Murang’a County is one of the counties of Kenya’s former Central Province. Its largest town is Murang’its capital called Fort Hall in colonial times (before 1963). It is inhabited mainly by and is considered the home of the Gikuyu, the largest community in Kenya. The county has a population of 942,581 (2009 census).
Economy Activities in Murang’a Town
Although Muranga Kenya is considered to be the least developed in the central province, it has banks, petrol stations, post office, lodges, nightclubs playing the latest western and local music, a restaurant serving local and exotic dishes, supermarkets, dry cleaners, and lively markets places. There is a district general hospital 500 yards to the north of the town. The town is accessible from Nairobi by Thika-Muranga road and from Nyeri.
